Visa & life in Spain
The practical stuff — what's allowed, what's funded, what to expect after you graduate.
- Student visa
- Non-EU students need a study visa (Estancia por estudios) at the consulate; on arrival, apply for a TIE (foreigner identity card) at the local police. EU/EEA students just get a NIE + register residency.
- Post-study work
- 12-month post-study residence permit (Ley 14/2013 art. 38 ter) — for job search OR entrepreneurship. Renewable if employed; leads to a work permit conversion.
- Tuition
- Public master's are set per-ECTS by each autonomous community: Madrid/Catalonia ~€35–45/credit, cheaper regions ~€15–20. A 60-ECTS master's = ~€1,000–€3,000/yr. Non-EU pay ~50% more in some regions. Private business schools (IE / ESADE / IESE) charge €30,000+.
- Scholarships
- MAEC-AECID (Spanish government scholarships for international students), La Caixa Fellowships (postgraduate, competitive), and Erasmus Mundus for EU joint programmes.
