In light of demographic change, the growing prevalence of chronic diseases, and rising healthcare costs, modern health systems increasingly rely on data-driven, technologically advanced innovations. The elite Master’s program AI in Biomedicine (M.Sc.), offered jointly with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, equips students to design, develop, and implement such innovations responsibly, using cutting-edge methods of Artificial Intelligence combined with selected biomedical disciplines. This research-oriented program is positioned at the intersection of computer science, engineering, and medicine. It provides the essential competencies to analyze complex medical data with advanced AI technologies, transform these data into actionable insights, and translate them into clinically relevant applications. Examples include developing interpretable AI models for clinical decision support, integrating multimodal patient data, and mitigating bias in diagnostic processes. Building on the three curricular pillars of “Foundations of AI,” “Applications of AI in Biomedicine and Healthcare,” and “Cross-cutting Theme,” students can specialize in the areas of “Advanced Machine Learning,” “Drug Discovery and Computational Biology,” “Subject Imaging and Sensing,” or “Natural Language Processing and Speech.” Throughout their studies, they critically examine the ethical, legal, and societal implications of deploying AI in healthcare. Graduates of the program are experts in the development and responsible application of innovative AI systems in biomedical contexts. They are qualified to manage these systems across their entire lifecycle – from algorithmic design and technical implementation to clinical integration – grounded in scientific rigor and ethical reflection. This prepares them for academic careers as well as leadership roles in research and development within the pharmaceutical, medical technology, and tech industries, strategic consulting, innovation management, or in AI-driven biomedical start-ups.
